• Truth

The wedding had already happened.

The vows were taken.

The rituals were completed.

The fire had witnessed everything.

And yet… the truth remained hidden.

The atmosphere inside the Sharma house was filled with soft chatter and ceremonial warmth. It was time for the post-wedding rituals—the ones that took place at the bride’s home before she officially left with her husband.

Noor sat quietly on the decorated seat, her head lowered, her face still concealed behind the deep red veil. The heavy fabric felt suffocating, but she didn’t move.

She couldn’t.

Around her, voices blended into noise—relatives laughing, women whispering, utensils clinking in the background.

Everything felt distant.

Unreal.

This was never supposed to be her place.

“Keep your head down,” Sunita murmured under her breath as she adjusted Noor’s dupatta, her tone sweet enough for others to hear… but sharp enough for Noor to understand.

Noor nodded faintly.

Beside her, Rivan stood with composed stillness, his presence commanding without effort. Dressed in a perfectly tailored sherwani, his expression remained unreadable—calm, controlled, distant.

He hadn’t said much since the wedding ended.

Only what was necessary.

Only what was expected.

But his silence wasn’t empty.

It was observant.

Sharp.

His eyes occasionally drifted toward the veiled figure sitting beside him.

Something about her felt… different.

Not wrong.

Just… different.

“Let’s begin the ritual,” one of the older women announced warmly, smiling at the gathered families.

Everyone settled into place.

This was a simple tradition—lifting the bride’s veil so the groom’s family could formally see her face.

A moment usually filled with teasing, laughter, and admiration.

But today…

There was an unusual tension in the air.

Sunita’s fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the veil.

Rajesh stood a little straighter, his expression composed, but his eyes betraying a flicker of unease.

Noor’s heartbeat quickened.

Don’t move.

Don’t speak.

She had been told what to do.

And she would follow.

Like always.

“Rivan beta,” Kavita Ranawat said gently, a polite smile on her face, “you should be the one to lift the veil.”

All eyes turned toward him.

Rivan didn’t react immediately.

His gaze shifted slowly to the girl sitting beside him—still, silent, hidden.

For a moment, he simply looked at her.

Then, without a word, he stepped forward.

The room grew quieter.

Even the whispers faded.

Noor felt her breath hitch as his hand moved toward the edge of her veil.

This was it.

There was no turning back now.

Her fingers curled slightly into the fabric of her lehenga, her entire body tense.

It’s okay…

Just stay quiet…

Rivan’s expression remained calm, but his eyes had sharpened.

He didn’t know why—

But something told him this moment mattered more than it should.

Slowly, deliberately…

He lifted the veil.

Silence.

Complete.

Absolute.

For a second, no one reacted.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Because the face revealed was not the one they were expecting.

Rivan’s hand stilled mid-air.

His gaze locked onto hers.

Not confusion.

Not immediately.

But recognition of something being… wrong.

His brows furrowed slightly.

“This isn’t—”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

But he didn’t need to.

The shift in the room was instant.

Kavita’s smile faded.

Mahendra’s expression hardened.

Aadhya’s eyes narrowed in quiet observation.

Akash face got unreadable.

Niharika looked confused.

Kabir blinked, clearly caught off guard.

Aryan straightened slightly, his gaze turning sharp.

Savitri face twisted in anger.

“This… is not Tanya,” Kavita said slowly, her voice controlled—but laced with disbelief.

The words echoed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Noor lowered her gaze instantly, her hands trembling in her lap.

No one had ever looked at her like this before.

Not with this much attention.

Not with this much shock.

Sunita stepped forward quickly, forcing a strained smile.

“Woh… actually—”

Mahendra’s voice cut through hers, calm but dangerously firm.

“Explain.”

Just one word.

But it carried weight.

The kind that silenced the entire room.

Rajesh cleared his throat, stepping forward, his posture respectful, almost submissive.

“There has been… a small situation,” he began carefully.

Rivan’s gaze shifted from Noor to Rajesh.

Sharp.

Cold.

“Small?” Aryan let out a short, disbelieving breath, running a hand through his hair. “You call this small?”

“Aryan,” Mahendra said quietly.

One look.

And Aryan fell silent.

But the tension only grew.

“Noor…” Sunita spoke, her tone suddenly softer, almost pleading. “Beta, look up.”

Noor didn’t move.

She couldn’t.

“Look at me,” Sunita repeated, a warning hidden beneath the sweetness.

Slowly, hesitantly…

Noor lifted her gaze.

And for the first time—

Rivan truly saw her.

Not as a bride.

Not as a role.

But as a person.

Wide, anxious eyes.

Fear, barely hidden.

And something else—

Acceptance.

As if she had already accepted whatever was coming next.

Rivan’s jaw tightened.

“What exactly is going on?” Rivan asked, his tone calm but firm.

Rajesh exhaled slowly.

“The girl you were supposed to marry… Tanya..our daughter…” he paused, choosing his words carefully, “she left, with her boyfriend.”

Silence.

Again.

But this time—it wasn’t shock.

It was anger.

Controlled.

Building.

“And instead,” Mahendra said, his voice dangerously quiet, “you thought it was appropriate… to replace her?”

Sunita stepped in quickly.

“We had no choice!” she said, her composure slipping for a moment. “The guests were there, the arrangements were done, the alliance—”

“The alliance?” Kavita repeated, disbelief evident in her voice. “You think this is about arrangements?”

Noor’s fingers tightened in her lap.

Every word felt heavier than the last.

“She is my daughter,” Rajesh added quickly, gesturing toward Noor. “She is well-mannered, educated, and—”

“That was not the agreement,” Mahendra interrupted.

His gaze shifted to Rivan.

“What do you have to say?”

The room fell silent again.

All eyes turned to him.

Rivan didn’t speak immediately.

His gaze returned to Noor.

She looked fragile.

Out of place.

Like she didn’t belong here either.

And yet…

She hadn’t said a single word.

Hadn’t defended herself.

Hadn’t explained anything.

Hadn’t even looked up properly.

Strange.

Very strange.

After a long pause, Rivan finally spoke.

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

Unreadable.

“When were you planning to tell us?”

Not raised.

Not angry.

But far more dangerous.

Rajesh lowered his gaze.

“We intended to explain after the ceremony…”

Kabir scoffed under his breath.

“Of course you did.”

Noor’s heart pounded painfully in her chest.

She wanted to say something.

Anything.

But the words refused to come.

They always did.

“This is unacceptable,” Kavita said firmly.

Mahendra nodded once, his decision already forming.

But before he could speak—

Rivan took a step forward.

Not away.

But closer.

His eyes remained on Noor.

Studying.

Assessing.

Trying to understand.

And for reasons he couldn’t explain…

He didn’t look away.

The room waited.

For anger.

For rejection.

For something.

But Rivan remained silent.

And somehow—

That silence felt heavier than everything else.

Because no one knew what he was thinking.

Not even Noor.

And maybe…

That was the most dangerous part of all.

The silence stretched.

Heavy. Unforgiving. Suffocating.

No one dared to speak after Rivan’s last question. The weight of the situation hung in the air, pressing down on every person in the room.

Noor sat frozen, her hands clenched tightly in her lap, her nails digging into her skin as if that slight pain could ground her.

It felt like everything was slipping out of control… even though she had never had control to begin with.

Mahendra’s voice finally broke the silence.

“This marriage,” he said slowly, each word measured, “was based on an agreement.”

His sharp gaze moved from Rajesh to Sunita.

“And you chose to deceive us.”

Rajesh immediately shook his head.

“No, no—please, try to understand—”

“Understand what?” Kavita cut in, her tone no longer polite.

“That you replaced the bride like it was nothing?”

Sunita stepped forward, desperation creeping into her expression.

“We didn’t replace her like she was nothing,” she said quickly.

“Noor is also—”

“A backup?” Kabir muttered under his breath, unable to hold back.

“A suitable girl,” Sunita corrected, her voice tightening.

“She is well-raised, respectful, and—”

“That is not the point,” Aryan said firmly.

The tension rose another level.

Noor’s breathing grew uneven.

Every word felt like it was about her… but no one was actually talking to her.

She was there.

Yet invisible.

Just like always.

“Rivan,” Mahendra spoke again, his voice calmer now but no less authoritative, “this decision concerns you the most.”

All eyes shifted back to him.

“This marriage can be annulled.”

The words hit like a sharp echo.

Noor’s fingers trembled.

Her heart stopped for a second.

Annulled.

So easily.

As if nothing had happened.

As if she… meant nothing.

For the first time, Noor’s gaze lifted slightly.

Not fully.

But enough to look at Rivan.

Just for a moment.

And in that brief second—

their eyes met.

His expression didn’t change.

But something in his gaze… paused.

Rivan didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, his eyes shifted back to Rajesh.

“You knew,” he said calmly, “and you still went ahead.”

Rajesh swallowed.

“We had no other option—”

“There is always an option,” Rivan interrupted, his tone still even.

“You chose the easier one.”

Sunita’s composure finally cracked.

“What were we supposed to do?” she snapped, her voice rising for the first time.

“Let everything fall apart? Do you have any idea what that would have done to our reputation?”

“And what about ours?” Kavita shot back instantly.

Noor flinched slightly at the raised voices.

Her instinct was to shrink.

To disappear.

“She is your wife now,” Rajesh said carefully, trying to regain control of the situation.

“Whatever happened… the rituals are done.”

Mahendra’s expression hardened.

“Rituals do not justify deception.”

Aadhya, who had been silent all this while, finally spoke.

Soft. Calm.

“But she didn’t deceive anyone.”

The room stilled again.

Her gaze rested on Noor.

“She hasn’t said a word since this started.”

It wasn’t an accusation.

It was an observation.

And somehow… that made it heavier.

Rivan’s eyes flickered briefly toward his sister.

Then back to Noor.

Still silent.

Still trembling.

Still… accepting.

“What’s your name?” he asked suddenly.

The question caught everyone off guard.

Noor blinked, startled.

For a second, she didn’t respond.

“Answer him,” Sunita whispered sharply.

Noor’s throat felt dry.

“…Noor,” she said softly.

Barely audible.

But enough.

Rivan repeated it in his mind.

Noor.

Not Tanya.

Not the bride he was supposed to marry.

But the one sitting in front of him now.

“Did you agree to this?” he asked next.

The question was simple.

Direct.

And for the first time—

it was actually meant for her.

Noor’s fingers tightened.

She opened her mouth… then closed it.

Words didn’t come easily to her.

They never did.

“…I…” her voice faltered.

Sunita stepped in immediately.

“She understood the situation,” she said quickly.

“She knows what was at stake.”

Rivan didn’t look at Sunita.

His gaze stayed fixed on Noor.

“I asked her.”

The calmness in his voice made it clear—he didn’t appreciate the interruption.

Sunita fell silent.

Noor felt her heartbeat in her ears.

Everyone was watching.

Waiting.

She lowered her gaze again.

“…It was decided,” she whispered.

Not a yes.

Not a no.

Just the truth.

Something shifted.

Very slightly.

But enough.

Rivan exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening for a brief moment before relaxing again.

He looked away from her.

Then at his father.

Then around the room.

Assessing.

Calculating.

“This changes nothing about what was done,” Mahendra said firmly.

“No,” Rivan agreed.

A pause.

Then—

“But it changes what happens next.”

The room went completely still.

Kavita frowned slightly.

“Rivan—”

He didn’t look at her.

His gaze returned to Noor.

She looked like she was bracing herself.

For rejection.

For humiliation.

For something she had already accepted.

And that—

that quiet acceptance—

didn’t sit right with him.

“We’re leaving,” Rivan said finally.

Simple.

Decisive.

But not what anyone expected.

Mahendra’s brows furrowed.

“And the marriage?”

Rivan’s response came without hesitation.

“It’s done.”

Silence.

Again.

But this time—

it felt different.

Noor’s breath caught.

She didn’t understand.

Did that mean…?

Kabir let out a quiet breath, clearly surprised.

Aryan’s gaze sharpened slightly.

Aadhya… simply watched.

Mahendra studied his son for a long moment.

“You’re choosing to accept this?”

Rivan’s expression remained unreadable.

“I’m choosing not to create a scene where it’s no longer needed.”

Diplomatic.

Controlled.

But not the full truth.

Be

cause somewhere—

beneath all the logic—

something else had already begun.

And he didn’t even realize it yet.

“Prepare the car,” he added calmly.

The decision had been made.

Noor sat there, still trying to process everything.

Nothing had gone the way she expected.

But somehow…

it hadn’t gone the worst way either.

And as she slowly stood up, her legs slightly unsteady—

she didn’t realize—

that this wasn’t just the beginning of a marriage.

It was the beginning of something far more complicated.

Something neither of them had chosen.

But neither of them would be able to escape.
